Clare has worked in the not-for-profit sector for 19 years and joined ESSA from SOS Children’s Villages UK where she was Director of Finance and IT. During her time there she brought financial clarity and stability following a period of uncertainty, led the organisation’s digital transformation and secured external investment in the fundraising strategy to grow and diversify income during subsequent years, enabling more children to grow up with the love and support of a family.

Prior to this, she held senior positions at Camfed International as Head of International Finance (Ghana, Malawi & UK) and Head of Audit & Compliance, establishing the Internal Audit function during a period of transformative growth for the organisation. Her role involved extensive travel across Africa, and she was instrumental in the scaling up and success of Camfed’s partnership with KIVA, providing loans to young women starting up and expanding small businesses. 

Clare read French and Mathematics at Exeter University before qualifying as a Management Accountant and moved into the not-for-profit sector early in her career. She also worked with Cambridge Regional College and the British Red Cross supporting both domestic and international operations, notably the Tsunami response in 2004.
